Releasev0.12.0
The Return
Driftkeep is back. 0.12.0 rebuilds combat so the server runs every fight, gives new players a clear path to their first kill, rebalances levelling and loot, and brings new menus, art and item icons along with a long list of fixes from the months since June.
New
- Rebuilt combat. Click a monster and you fight it and its pack until you walk away. The server runs every fight, so AFK combat carries on through kills, respawns and reconnects, and walking away always works
- A proper start for new players. Labelled Map (M) and Quests (J) buttons, a travel step on your first quest, a marker over your first slime, and one welcome screen instead of a pile of pop-ups
- A new main menu. Character select shows your hero in their real gear, beside the community goal, the latest patch notes and community links. Settings open from every menu screen
- Mailbox. Loot, quest rewards, crafts and offline gathering that don't fit in your bags go to your Mail instead of vanishing. Claim it all in one click
- Item icons for tools, ores, bars, gems, hides, fish and quest items, in every bag, shop and crafting list, on the ground and on the wiki
- New gear art. Three new swords (Wraithbone Blade, Runic Blade, Riftblade), a leather vest, plate and the Glacial Body, and metal swords and chestplates now show their material's colour
- Every zone has its own look. Each zone gets its own palette (Frozen Wastes has snow now), and Goblin Woods is redrawn with Grimtooth's walled warcamp and the Stillfall oak
- The Void Stalker and The Riftmaw have their own animated sprites
- Auto or manual, per skill. Right-click a skill-bar slot to switch it between auto-cast (gold A) and manual (grey M)
- What's New. Patch notes show in game after an update, on the website and on the forum
- A Leaderboard tab in the Social panel, and the current community goal on your HUD
- Graphics settings for phones and browsers. Choose your world resolution, your screen resolution on web, and a battery saver for when you're idle. Phones start on the lighter setting
- A livelier world. Recent chat is waiting when you log in, and the server hears about new drifters, every tenth level, Community Spirit and world boss kills
- Reward moments. Light rays on rare drops, toasts for epic and legendary loot, celebrations for life-skill levels, class unlocks, prestige, new zones and enchant jackpots
- Your character sheet shows gold, XP and kills per hour this session, plus lifetime kills, deaths, damage and playtime. Portraits show your real gear
- You can delete your account yourself from the website
Improved
- Levelling rebalanced. One smooth XP curve to 250, with no wall at 151, and you keep your level. Out-levelled zones give less XP, and quest and daily XP scale with your level
- Fair kill credit. Top damage and anyone with 25% or more get full rewards, 5 to 25% earns an assist (30% of the XP and gold, no loot), and under 5% gets nothing. World bosses are unchanged
- Runs better on phones and in browsers. Crowds cost a fraction of what they did to draw, each player gets far less network traffic, and busy zones stay smooth
- Zones hold fewer monsters, spread across the map instead of heaped where you arrive
- Gear rebalance. Sundered Rift gear and The Driftkeeper now follow the same power curve as everything else. Pieces you own were rescaled in place and keep their roll, so expect lower numbers
- The Driftkeeper and Azor Bars no longer drop from every monster, slimes included
- Crafting gear and tools has a small workshop fee (bars stay free), and enchanting uses zone materials matched to the item's level
- Story quests unlock at the level of the zone they send you to
- Kill quests count every variant, so any slime counts towards "Kill 5 Slimes"
- A steadier interface. Menus, the HUD, shop, crafting and inventory no longer jump around, and toasts stay up long enough to read
- Respecs, loot filter Apply and Abandon quest ask first, and failed actions tell you why
- Double-click to equip or use, a Max button in shops, Esc opens Settings, dots for unspent points, and Enter plays your last hero
- The daily reward has a button you can reopen and shows real item names
- Chat: /w works and opens a DM tab, times show in your time zone, Up and Down recall what you sent, drafts survive a disconnect, and chat stays put while you read back
- Leave it open on another monitor. The game keeps fighting at a lighter frame rate, and new whispers and @mentions show in the window title
- Add a friend or travel to their zone from their profile, with toasts for friends coming online and forum replies
- Reconnecting is tougher: the game keeps trying, recovers from a silent connection, and can warn you before a planned restart
- Kicks and bans now tell you why and for how long
- The welcome-back screen shows life-skill XP and no longer lists ore you didn't get
- Unverified accounts share the new-player chat limits until they verify, and new usernames are checked against look-alikes
- The website has patch notes and a live "drifters online" strip, and the Discord bot no longer shows your gold to everyone
Fixed
- AFK loot is never lost. Drops you don't pick up are collected for you: into your bags, your mailbox if they're full, or sold if both are
- Combat no longer stalls, snaps back to an old target or keeps swinging after the kill. Swings play once per hit, misses animate, and monsters face who they attack
- Coming back to a background browser tab jumps straight to now instead of fast-forwarding through everything you missed
- Progress could be lost on relog or when a save landed at the wrong moment. Saves no longer overlap, and gold, items and equipment are written together
- The Windows auto-updater could delete the folder you unzipped the game into. It now only touches its own files
- Password reset emails now work
- Offline gathering pays for every resource, counts from logout, and mails what doesn't fit
- Full-bag pickups go to your Mail instead of expiring, and ground drops no longer slow long sessions
- Copper ore nodes are visible again, and each ore has its own colour
- Goblins drop Goblin Hide again, so iron-tier gear can be crafted
- The Bronze Bar recipe that skipped tin is gone
- Quest items can no longer be equipped
- Quests check your items at turn-in, and kills only count towards your current step
- Daily reward gold is added correctly
- Respecs refund from your real level and keep your gear's bonuses
- Loot and crafting use your new level straight after a level-up
- Deleting a character no longer shows a false "Character not found"
- The crafting panel no longer pops open, or blocks clicks, when you view Recipes
- Other players show as down when they die, even if they were down when you arrived
- Monsters no longer vanish or freeze after respawning, and packed monsters stop vibrating
- Your shadow is back under your feet, and name labels stay put
- Parties keep to their size limit and invites respect blocks
- Changing zone from a room, or entering a second room, no longer leaves you stuck
- Bank withdraw-all moves the right amount
- Whispers to someone who just left say they're offline, not "delivered"
- The death screen no longer gets stuck if a respawn message goes missing
- The forum chatbox shows global chat again, and web messages reach the game
Under the hood
- Security and privacy hardening across accounts, chat, the forum and staff tools, including rotating login tokens and ending game sessions on a password change
- The server copes with far bigger crowds: combat no longer waits on the database, and you only get updates for what's near you. We tested 500 players in one zone
- Much smaller network messages. The inventory and bank send changes, not full copies
- An out-of-date client is asked to update instead of joining a broken session
- A smaller first download on the web, and effects that cost frames in browsers are pre-baked
- Limits on friend request, party invite, mention, forum post and potion spam
- Flagged chat is kept for a year for moderation, then deleted, and the privacy policy now matches the game
Known issues
- Attack speed from gear affixes, enchants and five class skills (Quick Draw, Bloodlust, Time Warp, Adrenaline, Glory) currently has no effect
- Offline XP is well below online XP in some zones since the rebalance
- Drop rates haven't been retuned yet, so higher zones and endgame crafting can feel slow. Loot pacing is next
- Some gear lists flat HP, damage or armour that doesn't apply. Only the rolled stat and affixes count
- In the redrawn Goblin Woods, some monsters, nodes and fishing spots aren't placed for the new map yet
- Some monsters still use placeholder art or vanish on death, and downed players show as a greyed-out pose for now
- Windows desktop: the 0.11 updater can't install this version. Download 0.12 from driftkeep.com once and updates work in game again
